오월의 마지막 날/배 중진

 

보내고 싶지 않은 세월이지만
오랫동안 같이 하고 싶은 5월이지만
황금같이 귀중한 시간이지만

 

과감하게 떠나가라 등을 밀었습니다
쓸데없는 미련 두지 말라고 호통을 쳤습니다
떠남은 또 다른 만남의 기회가 될 거라고 말했습니다

 

죽음의 코로나바이러스도 시간과 같이 소멸하고

흑백갈등의 도화선으로 폭발한 폭동도 잠잠해질 테고

우리의 사무친 그리움도 망각곡선을 그리게 될 겁니다

 

누군가 막연히 말했다지요

세월이 약이라고

희망의 싹은 고통 속에서 스멀거린다고

점점 각박해지는 세상입니다. 우한 폐렴으로 고통받기 시작하더니
경제적으로 생각지도 못한 타격을 받고 너나없이 쓰러지고 있네요.
시간이 지나면 어려움도 사라질 거라 생각도 하는데 당장 일분일초가
급하지 싶습니다. 미국은 영원한 흑백갈등이 잠재적이고 떠나지 않다가
누군가 나쁜 짓을 하여 도화선이 되면 잘, 잘못을 따지지 않고 그의 이름이
영웅시되고 폭동으로 연결되어 급기야는 또 다른 희생자를 불러일으키는
악순환이 계속되고 있어 경악을 금치 못한답니다. 지금 서로 이를 악물고
허리띠를 졸라매고 같이 역경을 파헤쳐 나가야 하는데 자꾸 뒷걸음치고
있어 안타깝습니다. 즐거운 6월이 되시기 바랍니다.

1770: Great Barrier Reef is discovered
British explorer James Cook was on his first expedition to explore the Southern Hemisphere when his ship,

the HMS Endeavour, ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef sustaining considerable damage.

This led to its accidental discovery.

1776: Committee of Five is formed
The Second Continental Congress formed a committee of five which consisted of
Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia,
John Adams of Massachusetts, Robert R. Livingston of New York and
Roger Sherman of Connecticut to draft the Declaration of Independence of the United States.
The committee operated till July 5 when the declaration was published.

 

1935: Edwin Armstrong holds public demonstration of FM broadcasting
American electrical engineer Edwin Armstrong held the first public demonstration of the

FM radio – at the Institute of Radio Engineers’ conference. The transmission consisted of a series of

everyday sounds and music from Armstrong’s friend’s house; the transmission was clear and static-free,

unlike AM.

1937: Stalin purges Soviet military
A Soviet military court ordered the execution of eight experienced commanders of the Red Army.

They were charged with participating in a Nazi plot to overthrow the regime. Their executions triggered

a two-year purge of commanders and soldiers; 30,000 were discharged and thousands more arrested and killed.

1942: US and USSR sign Lend Lease Agreement
Secretary of State Cordell Hull and Soviet ambassador Maxim Litvinov signed the Lease-Lend agreement

concluded between Soviet Russia and the United States in Washington during the secret visit of

Soviet foreign commissar Vyacheslav Molotov.

 

1950: Ben Hogan wins U.S. Open with remarkable comeback
Ben Hogan met with a car accident sixteen months ago and the doctors were worried that he would never

walk again. However, Hogan returned after a close brush with death, to his fans delight, made one of the

greatest comebacks to win his second U.S. Open title. He hit a one-under par 69 to finish four strokes

ahead of Lloyd Mangrum and six ahead of George Fazio to register a remarkable victory.

1955: Motor racing's darkest moment at Le Mans
Pierre Levegh lost control of his Mercedes-Benz and crashed into the spectators’ stand, killing over 80 people and injuring many, during the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France. Levegh was going at about 150 mph (241 kph) when he swerved to avoid another car, crashing into the grandstand with his car exploding immediately and killing him. Parts of the exploding wreckage went straight into the crowd, killing and injuring people. The organizers did not call off the race but Mercedes-Benz withdrew from motor racing on that day, only to come back in 1987.

1962: The great escape from Alcatraz prison
Three prisoners at Alcatraz, (from left) Frank Lee Morris, Clarence Anglin and John William Anglin, all serving time for bank robbery, staged a rare escape from the prison in San Francisco Bay, California on the night of June 11 through the makeshift raft. Although many historians think it's likely they perished in the frigid treacherous currents surrounding the maximum-security island prison and some believed it's possible they made it to freedom. But, they were never found or heard from again.

1963: Monk Thich Quang Duc immolates himself
To protest the oppression of Buddhists in South Vietnam under the regime of President Ngô Đình Diệm, the 73-year-old Đức immolated himself. A photo of the incident, which won the Pulitzer Prize for photographer Malcolm Browne, showed the monk seated in a lotus position as flames engulfed him. The United States, which backed the South Vietnam government, subsequently did not intervene when Diệm was overthrown in a coup in November that year.

1979: John Wayne dies
The iconic Western actor, known for the films 'Stagecoach' (1939), 'Red River' (1948) and

'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' (1962), died at the age of 72 after battling cancer.

He won Oscar for Best Actor in a leading role for 'True Grit' (1969).

1985: Vega 1 lands on Venus
Around six months after it was launched, the Soviet spacecraft landed on Venus and sent back data about the surface and the atmosphere of the planet for nearly an hour. Four days after the landing of Vega 1, its twin, Vega 2, landed on Venus and transmitted data for over 46 hours. The mother spacecraft subsequently went to fulfil its main mission – an encounter with Halley’s Comet in March 1986.

1987: Margaret Thatcher is elected for her third consecutive term
With the Conservative Party win in the 1987 general elections, Thatcher became the first British prime minister to get elected for her third consecutive term. The third Thatcher ministry also made her the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century and the first woman to do so.

1993: 'Jurassic Park' is released in the US
Based on a Michael Crichton novel, the first installment in the 'Jurassic Park' franchise opened in the United States on this day. Starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough, it broke the record set by 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' to become the highest-grossing film released worldwide. It won three Academy Awards.

2001: Timothy McVeigh is executed
Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy McVeigh was executed by lethal injection at a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, on this day. McVeigh was convicted for his involvement in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing, that killed around 168 people, on April 19, 1995.

2004: Ronald Reagan's state funeral service is held
The state funeral service of 40th president of America was held at the Washington National Cathedral and was presided by President George W. Bush, with people like Margaret Thatcher, George H.W. Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev, Tony Blair and Prince Charles in attendance. Reagan died of pneumonia complicated by Alzheimer's disease on June 5.

2009: WHO declares swine flu a pandemic
The World Health Organization’s Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan declared H1N1 swine flu a pandemic after the organization found evidence of community-level outbreaks in at least two WHO regions. The agency raised its pandemic alert level to Phase 6, its highest. At the time of the announcement, over 70 countries had reported cases of swine flu, which was the first pandemic in around 40 years.

2010: FIFA World Cup kicks off in South Africa
The continent of Africa hosted its first ever soccer world cup. The opening ceremony took place at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. It involved 1,500 performers celebrating African culture in front of nearly 85,000 people. Over the following month, 32 teams would compete for the trophy, with Spain beating the Netherlands in the final.
