여명/배 중진

 

남들과 소통하면서
경험을 공유하면서
누구보다 빠르게
자기만의 아성을 쌓아가는 사람이 있지만

 

혼자 끙끙대며
궁리하며
좌절하면서도
실낱같은 한 가닥의 희망을 놓지 않는 사람도 있지요

 

답답해 보이지만
뭔가 집념이 그 사람을 무섭고도 아름답게 만듭니다
존경하게 만듭니다

 

성공하면 좋지만
설사 꿈을 이루지 못한다고 하여도
그 과정이 중요하고
언젠가는 해 뜰 날도 있겠지요

결과보다도 과정이 존경받는 세상이
더 좋은 세상이라 생각합니다.
어려서부터 공부를 잘하는 어린이는
잘못도 용서받으며 자라납니다.
이게 부조리의 기점은 아닐까 생각해 봅니다.

1787: Pennsylvania ratifies the U.S. Constitution

Pennsylvania became the second state to ratify the U.S. Constitution by a vote of 46-23 after
Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution by a vote of 30-0 on Dec. 7, 1787.

1901: First radio transmission is sent across the Atlantic

Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi (L) and his assistant, George Kemp received a message sent from
Poldhu, England, at Signal Hill, St. John’s, Canada. The transmission message was the Morse code
signal for the letter “s.”

1911: Delhi replaces Calcutta as the capital of India

British monarch King George V and his consort Queen Mary held one of the grandest events,
where the king after assuming the crown announced shifting of the capital from Calcutta (now Kolkata)
to Delhi. The foundation stone of New Delhi was laid by them on Dec. 15, 1911 during their royal visit.

1913: 'Mona Lisa,' recovered

Authorities in Florence, Italy, announced that the Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece 'Mona Lisa,' which
was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris two years ago, had been recovered from the Italian thief
Vincenzo Peruggia. Later, Peruggia was convicted in Italy for the robbery and spent 14 months in jail.

1915: Frank Sinatra is born

Frank Sinatra, famously known as Ol' Blue Eyes' was born. One of the most popular musical artists
of the 20th century and a Hollywood star with nearly 60 films to his credit died in 1998.

1925: The last emperor of Iran is deposed

The last emperor of Iran, Ahmad Shah Qajar (right) was deposed and was succeeded by Reza Shah Pahlavi.
The event marked the termination of the Qajar dynasty and the rise of the Pahlavi dynasty.

1937: The USS Panay is bombed and sunk

Japanese forces launched an attack on the American gunboat, which was anchored in the Yangtze River
outside Nanjing, China. The Japanese claimed that it was unintentional as they did not spot the American
flags and paid an indemnity of nearly $2 million. The event led to increased tensions between the U.S.
and Japan.

1946: A gift for the United Nations

The United Nations committee voted to accept a six-block tract of Manhattan real estate offered
as a gift by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. to be the site of the U.N.’s headquarters.

1963: Kenya gains independence

The African nation became an independent country after England ceded its sovereignty.
Exactly after a year, it became a republic and assumed the name Republic of Kenya.
Jomo Kenyatta served as its first prime minister and a year later assumed the role of
its president from 1964-78.

1969: Deadly bomb blasts in Italy

At least 15 people were killed and more than 100 were injured in a terrorist attack when a bomb exploded
at the headquarters of National Agrarian Bank in Piazza Fontana in Milan, Italy. On this same day,
three more bombs were detonated in Rome and Milan, and another was found unexploded.

1985: Arrow Air disaster kills 256

Arrow Air Flight 1285 crashed shortly after taking off from a refueling stop in Gander, Canada,
killing all 256 people – 248 members of the U.S. military 101st Airborne Division and eight crew members
on board. The soldiers were on their way home following a peacekeeping deployment in Sinai, Egypt.

2000: Bush vs Gore dispute is resolved

Following the dispute surrounding the 2000 presidential election over who won the state of Florida,
the U.S. Supreme Court noted that a recount would not be accepted as it violated the Equal Protection Clause
of the Fourteenth Amendment. Effectively, George W. Bush narrowly defeated Al Gore to win the presidency.
