취하지 않은 길/배 중진

 

1984년 오늘,

11월 14일을 두 번 맞이한 날

한국을 떠나면서

미국에 도착하면서

 

35년이나 체류하리라 꿈도 꾸지 못했고

목적했던바 성취하지도 못했지만

 

그 당시 들고 왔던 돈보다 나이만큼이나

엄청나게 곱절로 불은 돈을 만지작거리면서

그나마 위안으로 삼고 있는 나날

 

한국도 잘 나아가고 있고

미국도 잘 이끌어가고 있는데

 

설움 많은 타국에서

방황의 길에서

잃은 것은 젊음이요

사라진 것은 꿈이더라

 

알지 못했던 그리움만 산더미처럼 쌓여만 가고

사랑했던 사람과 영영 이별한 상처만 부둥켜안았는데

 

고국인 한국에서 사랑하는 사람들과 같이 오순도순 살았다면

지금의 모습은 어땠을까 생각도 해보는 오늘이다

1789: Thanksgiving proclamation

Americans observed a day of thanksgiving set aside by President George Washington to mark
the adoption of the Constitution of the United States.

1864: 'Alice in Wonderland' manuscript sent as a Christmas present

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who was a teacher of mathematics at Oxford, gifted a hand-written manuscript
of his story 'Alice's Adventure Under Ground' as a Christmas present to Alice Liddell, the 10-year-old
daughter of one of his colleagues. Dodgson later published the story under a pen name, Lewis Carroll,
as 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,' which went on to become one of the most popular fantasy novels
of all time.

1922: Archaeologists enter the tomb of King Tut

British archaeologists Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon became the first men to enter the tomb of
Egyptian ruler King Tutankhamen in over 3,000 years. They were surprised to find the teenage king’s
sealed burial chambers. Among other priceless objects, the chambers contained a gold coffin,
inside which lay the mummy of the king.

1941: Japanese task force left for Pearl Harbor

Under the leadership of Admiral Chūichi Nagumo, the Japanese strike force First Air Fleet left for
Pearl Harbor and bombed the U.S. naval base in Hawaii Territory in one of the most devastating
aerial attacks in history. The event led to the entry of American forces into World War II.

1941: Roosevelt establishes the modern Thanksgiving holiday

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill, officially establishing the fourth Thursday in November
as Thanksgiving Day.

1948: First Polaroid camera goes on sale

Model 95 – the first Polaroid camera was sold in Boston at $89.75 – and became the prototype for
all Polaroid Land cameras for the next 15 years.

1950: China enters the Korean conflict

Chinese troops launched a massive counterattack against the United States and
Republic of Korea troops, driving the Allied forces from North Korea and putting
an end to any thoughts of a quick or conclusive U.S. victory.

1992: Queen turns taxpayer

Prime Minister John Major announced that Queen Elizabeth II will voluntarily pay tax on her private income
and largely absorb the royal family's expenses. The Queen became the first British monarch since the
1930s to pay income tax.

1998: First British PM addresses Irish Parliament

Tony Blair became first British Prime Minister to speak to the Irish Parliament, declared an end to
centuries of British-Irish hostility and said that 'London and Dublin must now work together to
rescue the stalled Northern Ireland peace effort'.

2000: Florida certifies Bush as winner

In 2000, Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris certified George W. Bush the winner over
Al Gore in the state’s presidential balloting by a 537-vote margin. Gore then sued Harris
because all of the recounts had not been completed when she certified the results.

2008: Mumbai hit by terror attacks

Ten armed militants from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba carried out a series of coordinated attacks on
hotels, cafes, residential areas and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station in Mumbai, India. Lasting
four days, the attacks left around 164 dead and more than 300 wounded. While the rest of the terrorists were
killed by Indian armed forces, one attacker was captured alive and was hanged to death on Nov. 21, 2012.

2011: NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity launched

An Atlas V rocket took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S., with the car-sized Curiosity rover, for Mars.
Probing Mars’ climate and geology, the mission intends to find whether the red planet ever had environmental
conditions that supported life. The rover is also tasked with examining radiation levels on Mars, which will help
scientists to assess hazards that could be faced by future astronauts.
