파상공격/배 중진

 

남쪽 지방이라 단풍을 이야기하기는 이르지만

울창한 숲을 바라보고 있노라니 그렇게 아름다울 수가 없고

여름의 끈끈함을 느낄 수 있었으며 모든 것이 싱싱하다

 

조금 전 Antique shop에서 산 옛날의 풍경화들을 흐뭇하게 바라보면서

자동차에서 자동차로 옮기는데 모기들이 에워싼다

별 대수롭지 않게 생각하며 잠깐이지만 일을 끝마쳤는데

그 짧은 순간에 열방도 넘게 쏘였다

 

반응도 빨라 몸에 불이 붙었는지

따가워서 어쩔 줄을 모르겠다

금방 빨갛게 부어오른 곳에

비상약을 처바르니 그제야 아픔이 서서히 가라앉는다

 

최신전투기들이 이착륙하는 곳이라

모기들도 날렵하고 기술이 뛰어남을 뒤늦게 알아차렸다

 

뉴욕의 한여름에도 모기 문제가 없었는데

전혀 방비하지 못한 곳에서 엉겁결에 일 년 치를 다 쏘인 것 같다

 

남에게 줄 것이 하나도 없고 가장 적당하게 절약하며 살아왔는데

누군가 나의 몸을 원할 때 약간은 망설였지만

후회하지 않고 무방비로 몸을 맡겼다

 

영광의 상처는 다음 날 아침에도 붉게 부풀어 올라왔다

천만다행인 것은 가렵지 않았다는 것이며

영원히 잊지 못할 단풍 여행이었다

1851: 'Moby-Dick' is published in America

Herman Melville's legendary novel about Captain Ahab's obsessive quest to capture the elusive white whale,
'Moby-Dick' was released. It was first released in London in October 1851 with title namely 'The Whale'
and then in U.S. a month later. Even after a disappointing reception, Moby-Dick later became one of the
important elements in high school reading books across the U.S.

1889: Nellie Bly begins her tour around the world

The American journalist went on a trip around the world to beat the fictional record set by Phileas Fogg
in Jules Verne’s novel 'Around the World in Eighty Days.' On Nov. 14, she boarded the Augusta Victoria
to begin her 72-day trip from Hoboken, New Jersey, U.S. Some of the places she visited were England,
Singapore, and Hong Kong.

1910: First takeoff from a ship

Lieutenant Eugene Ely became the first aviator to take off from a warship when his Curtiss pusher airplane
took off from the deck of the cruiser USS Birmingham docked at Norfolk, Virginia, U.S. The plane landed
on a beach nearby after flying less than three miles (five kilometers).

1914: Ottoman Empire declares a holy war

On behalf of the Ottoman government, the religious leader Sheikh-ul-Islam declared an Islamic holy war
in Constantinople in the capitol of the Ottoman Empire. He urged his Muslim followers to take up arms
against Britain, France, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro in World War I.

1918: First president of the Czechoslovak Republic is elected

Czechoslovakia gained independence after the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed at the end of World War I.
A local government was formed by Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, who served as its first president from Nov. 14,
1918 to Dec. 14, 1935. He was re-elected in 1920, 1927, and 1934.

1940: Germany bombards Coventry, England

During World War II, the German Air Force bombed the English city of Coventry in a massive raid that went on
for more than 10 hours. It was carried out by over 500 aircraft, which devastated the city and killed hundreds
of people. More than 4,000 homes were destroyed and three-quarters of the city's factories were damaged.

1969: Apollo 12 is launched

The second manned mission to the moon was launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, U.S.
It carried astronauts Charles Conrad Jr., Richard F. Gordon Jr. and Alan L. Bean. After a successful mission,
the crew returned to Earth on Nov. 24.

1970: Marshal University’s football team dies

A chartered Southern Airways DC-9 crashed while trying to land in West Virginia, killing all 75 people
on board, including the Marshall University football team and its coaching staff.

1995: The U.S. government shuts down temporarily

The U.S Government instituted a partial shutdown, closing national parks and museums while government
offices operated with skeleton crew. A government shutdown is the process the Executive Branch must enter
into when Congress and the President fail to pass legislation funding government operations and agencies.

2002: First woman to lead a party in the US Congress

Nancy Pelosi was elected as House Minority leader in the Cannon House office building.
After Minority Leader Dick Gephardt resigned to seek the Democratic nomination in the 2004 presidential
election, Pelosi replaced him becoming the first woman to lead a political party in the US Congress.

2008: Inaugural G20 Summit is held

The first G-20 economic summit opened in Washington, D.C. It was a two-day summit where the G20
achieved a mutual agreement about cooperation in key areas to strengthen economic growth amidst
the then ongoing financial crisis and lay reformation foundation to avoid such crisis in future.

2015: High-speed train derails in France

At least 11 people were killed while several were injured after a high-speed train, undergoing a test run, derailed
on the new Paris-Strasbourg high-speed line and plunged into a canal, in the town of Eckwersheim, France.

2017: Rancho Tehama Reserve shootings

A series of shootings occurred in an unincorporated community in Tehama County,
Rancho Tehama Reserve, when a 44-year-old gunman, Kevin Janson Neal went on
a rampage at multiple locations, including a 'Rancho Tehama Elementary School' in
rural northern California. Four people were killed and nearly a dozen were wounded,
including several children. Kevin killed himself after a Corning police officer rammed
and stopped his stolen vehicle.

가을을 보내고 겨울을 재촉하는 비가 한차례 지난 후
냉랭해진 날씨가 고운 잎들을 마구 흔들어 땅으로 내려앉습니다
이렇듯이 겨울 문턱을 넘긴 추위가 한해의 끝자락임을 깨닫게합니다
늘 건강하시고 언제나 활기찬에너지 가득 행복한 날들이루시길요,고맙습니다.

 

올해는 가을 단풍의 때를 잘못 맞췄지 싶었답니다. 우리 마을도 아름다운데
친구 만나러 남쪽으로 내려가면서 화근이 되었지요. 절정을 맛보지 못했고
남부는 아직도 시퍼렇게 살아있는 잎이었지요. 올라오면서 가을을 보았는데
아, 글쎄 즐길 사이도 없이 비가 내려 한숨만 쉬며 북쪽으로 올라왔더니 우리
마을은 빛바랜 낙엽이 뒹굴면서 어디 갔다 지금에서야 왔느냐고 하소연하더군요.
참, 안타까운 가을이었습니다. 잘못 계산하여 한 해를 망쳤고 그렇게 많이
보았는데도 아쉬움뿐이랍니다. 멋진 가을이 되시기 바랍니다.
