작은 벌레의 운명/배 중진

 

모처럼 비가 많이 쏟아졌고
우린 큰 다래를 양철지붕 물받이 밑
마당 가에 쭉 펼쳐 놓았다

 

여행을 떠나면서
가득 고인 물을 퍼
잔디밭에 뿌리기도 하고
화단에 물이 필요한듯하여
다 퍼주었다

 

봄비가 또 쏟아지리라는 가상 아래
감히 저수지를 비웠던 것이었다

 

열흘이 지나
집에 돌아오니 한 방울의 물도
더 고이지 않았지만
우연히 눈길이 가는 것이 있어

 

아침에 자세히 들여다보니
갑각류의 어느 작은 곤충이었는데
그 얇은 물에서 헤쳐 나오려고
종일 발버둥을 치고 있었다

 

오후에 물동이를 지나면서 다시 보니
노력한 보람이 있었는지
정상까지 올라와
딱딱한 등 밑의 부드러운 날개를 펼쳐 보이면서
비상할 준비를 하길래
날아가라고 겁을 주었더니

 

세상에, 그의 운명은 또 나락으로 떨어지는 것이었다
작은 몸의 수백 배에 달하는 곳으로 이젠 거꾸로 떨어져
배영을 하듯 서두르지 않는 상황인데
저 작은 가련한 미물이
오늘 중에 창공으로 솟아올라
부모·형제가 기다리는 곳으로 갈는지는
아무도 모르리
불쌍한 것 같으니라고
